What is a zine?
A zine is a self-published magazine- or book-like project centered on a specific topic or theme, and can be made by one person or by a team of people. They can be single- or multi-issue. Fanzines, like Conventus Stellarum, tend to have physical and/or digital merchandise accompanying them (such as charms, art prints, stickers, etc.).

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Is zine experience required to apply?
No, zine experience is not required. You can apply if you’re brand-new to zines, a seasoned zine vet, or somewhere in between!

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Is there an age requirement?
We require all contributors to be at least 18 years of age at time of application. We will not make any exceptions to this rule.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Will this zine be digital or physical?
We will have a physical main zine and merch, along with a digital side zine contributors may freely create for. We may have digital merch as well, pending our interest check.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Will this zine have any NSFW?
No, this zine will not have any NSFW. The entire project will be SFW and not go beyond material shown/portrayed in the canon source (so there may be some violence, for example, or revealing outfits within the bounds of what’s already in canon).

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Will this zine feature any shipping between characters?
The main zine may feature platonic, familial, and romantic relationships between OCs only. An allusion to a relationship with a canon character may be made, but must be approved by mods and not be the main purpose of the piece, as the focus of the zine should be the OCs entirely rather than the canon characters.

We will feature platonic, familial, and romantic relationships (separated into sections) between OCs and canon characters in the digital side zine. With that in mind, if you are someone who romantically ships your OC with a canon character and wish to apply, please keep in mind that there may also be someone who romantically ships their OC with that same canon character; if you are both accepted, you both may create content for the side zine for your ship, but please make sure you are able to behave respectfully if you have any discomfort.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

How many contributors are you aiming to accept for each role?
Including guests (but not including mods), we aim for 1 main zine cover artist, 20-25 page artist spots, 5-8 writer spots, and 6-10 merch slots. Numbers may change pending our interest check.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

What kind of merch will this zine produce?
This will depend on our interest check. We will likely have prints, stickers/sticker sheets, acrylic charms, photocards, pin badges, and/or similar merch, but will likely not have specialty items such as enamel pins, shikishi boards, shaker charms, etc. We aim to have a couple of stretch goals.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

How will contributors be compensated?
We will, at minimum, provide all contributors with a digital copy of the zines and digital merch (should digital merch be created). We aim to provide up to a full bundle (physical main zine and all merch) plus shipping for all contributors pending sales. If there are any items we cannot provide at no cost, we will allow contributors to buy copies of all items at production cost.
The Interest Check will determine if we're for-profit or for-charity. If we are for-profit, proceeds post-production and shipping will be fairly split among contributors and mods. If we are for-charity, proceeds post-production and shipping will be donated to a charity we will decide upon as a team.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Do I need experience producing merch to apply as a merch artist?
No, you do not need experience producing merch. We will provide specs for you to follow as a merch artist specific to your merch type, and the mod team will handle producing and shipping all zines and merch produced for this project.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

What is an Original Character (OC)?
Original Characters, or OCs, are basically what it says in the name: original characters made by someone for an original or pre-existing media. They can be made by creators for their original stories or be made and integrated into a pre-existing media’s canon.

For this project, we will feature creators’ Honkai: Star Rail OCs, aka characters they made that are integrated into the world of HSR using HSR’s canon. We also welcome OCs from creator-made planets/settings within the world of HSR, as well as other creator-made aspects, so long as they don’t completely contradict pre-established canon.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Do I need to have a Honkai: Star Rail OC to participate/apply?
We require all OCs featured in the zine to be HSR OCs – this can be an OC made specifically for HSR or an OC you made separate from HSR but have created an HSR adaptation for lore- and appearance-wise. It is alright if you do not have a final visual reference of your OC(s) at time of application, so long as you have a very clear idea/concept of their appearance.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Can I apply with a self-insert/sona?
This is an HSR OC zine, so we prefer you apply with an HSR OC. However, if your self-insert/sona has enough HSR-specific lore and adaptations – enough that you are comfortable referring to your self-insert/sona as a character with a degree of separation from yourself – you may do so. You can also include information on this self-insert/sona in your application or email us with that information, if you’d like a mod to confirm you’re good to apply using your self-insert/sona.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

Are there limits on content we can make for the zine?
Zine pieces are required to be SFW. For things like combat/violence and mature themes, they must be within the bounds of HSR’s canon material shown in game or promotional material posted to official accounts. NSFW is prohibited. This applies to the main and side zines.

application guidelines

Before applying, please review our entire Contributor Guidelines section, linked within our Info Doc here.

You can also read our application requirements on this page (recommendations appear on our Info Doc, only required portions listed here).

You may apply to multiple roles, but may only be accepted for one.

Applications will be linked once the application period begins.

Cover/Page Artist Application Requirements

  • 3 sample pieces that best represent the quality of illustration you’d create for the zine. All samples must be SFW.

  • At least 1 sample must feature an HSR character.

  • We recommend 1 sample featuring any OC of yours, but it is not required.

  • A portfolio containing at least 6 pieces that best shows your range as an artist. These 6 pieces may include your 3 individual samples. Your portfolio should be SFW, and if there is NSFW, it should be separated and clearly labeled as such.

  • We recommend you include in your portfolio a piece featuring any of your OCs, particularly your HSR OC(s), such as a design wip/process, full piece, reference sheet, etc.

  • Please make sure that all links are accessible! If mods cannot access your links, we will not inform you and we will be unable to grade your application.

  • You may optionally submit written information/visuals about your HSR OC(s) you plan to feature in the zine, should you be accepted. We highly recommend doing so.

Writer Application Requirements

  • 3 sample pieces with a word count of 1.5k-2.5k that best represent the quality of fic you’d create for the zine. You may submit excerpts from fics; please make sure you note it is an excerpt within the sample. All samples must be SFW. Please include the total word count of each sample at its start and use content warnings if you feel they are necessary.

  • At least 1 sample must be a completed fic within 2k words.

  • At least 1 sample must feature an HSR character.

  • At least 1 sample must feature any OC of yours.

  • A single sample may be used to fulfill multiple of the above sample requirements.

  • A portfolio containing at least 6 pieces that best shows your range as a writer. These 6 pieces may include your 3 individual samples. Your portfolio should be SFW, and if there is NSFW, it should be separated and clearly labeled as such. You may include fics under or over the samples’ word count, but we ask you to submit no more than one chapter from a multi-chaptered work.

  • Please make sure that all links are accessible! If mods cannot access your links, we will not inform you and we will be unable to grade your application.

  • You may optionally submit written information/visuals about your HSR OC(s) you plan to feature in the zine, should you be accepted. We highly recommend doing so.

Merch Artist Application Requirements

  • 3 sample pieces that best represent the quality/type of merch you’d create for the zine. All samples must be SFW.

  • At least 1 sample must feature an HSR character.

  • A graphic showing a merch line you designed is acceptable for a single sample (such as a series of summer-themed HSR charms).

  • Experience designing/producing merch is not required.

  • A portfolio containing at least 6 pieces that best shows your range as an artist. These 6 pieces may include your 3 individual samples. Your portfolio should be SFW, and if there is NSFW, it should be separated and clearly labeled as such.

  • Please make sure that all links are accessible! If mods cannot access your links, we will not inform you and we will be unable to grade your application.

  • You may optionally submit written information/visuals about your HSR OC(s) you plan to feature in the zine, should you be accepted. We highly recommend doing so.
